Feather Raises €6 Million to Develop Pan-European Insurance for Expats
Feather, a startup focused on providing digital insurance solutions for expats in Europe, has secured €6 million in a funding round led by Keen Venture Partners. Additional investors include Plural and industry leaders from Allianz, AXA, and Bastian.

Prominent investors in the latest round include Monzo founder Tom Blomfield, GoCardless and Nested’s Matt Robinson, N26’s CTO Gino Cordt, and Oyster founder Tony Jamous.

The new capital will enable Feather to further its expansion across Europe, aiming to develop a comprehensive pan-European insurance product that allows expats to adjust their coverage seamlessly as they move between countries.

According to reports, Feather bootstrapped for two years before its first funding round in 2021, and has now raised a total of €10 million. The company has a customer base spanning over 150 countries secure digital insurance. Feather currently operates in Germany, France, and Spain, with plans to expand to three more countries by the end of 2024. The recent launch in Spain has shown significant growth, surpassing the company’s initial progress in Germany.

Digital insurance for Europe’s expats

Feather specialises in providing insurance to expats in Europe by offering a digital platform designed for their unique requirements. Traditional insurance options tend to be complicated, fragmented, and not easily adaptable across different countries, making them unsuitable for a mobile lifestyle. Feather’s platform provides unbiased advice, straightforward claims processes, transparent policies, and customizable plans, catering to expats who frequently relocate for work and need flexible insurance solutions.

Launched in 2018 by Rob Schumacher and Vincent Audoire during their time at Entrepreneur First’s Berlin cohort, Feather was born out of the founders’ own struggles with Germany’s insurance system. The company’s technology platform combines the agility of a tech startup with the reliability of established insurers, ensuring regulatory compliance while managing all aspects of the insurance process online. This results in lower costs, increased responsiveness, and an improved user experience, supported by 4.9-star ratings on TrustPilot and Google.

Rob Schumacher, co-founder of Feather, said: “Our mission has always been clear: to build an insurance platform that not only meets the needs of today’s expats but does so with transparency, simplicity, and trust. This funding represents a vote of confidence in our vision and our technology, and we are excited about the opportunities it opens up for us to serve the expat community across Europe even better.”

Taavet Hinrikus, Partner at Plural also commented, saying: “With a laser focus on expats’ needs and a best-in-class tech platform, Feather is breaking down the complex, regulated insurance industry with an exceptional founder, and market fit. There are many parallels to the growth and trajectory of Wise and Feather’s early success is a clear sign of things to come. It’s exciting to see the first real signs of international traction that we’re going to build on in the next few years.”

Abdul Afridi, from Keen added: “Feather’s approach to insurtech stands out in a crowded market. Their expat experience resonated with me as a fellow expat but what has convinced me of the investment case was the robust technology and clear path to scalability Rob and Vincent have built. We believe in Feather’s vision of a genuinely pan-European insurance product and are excited to support them achieving this mission.”
